With a strong research base and increasing investor interest, Switzerland is gaining traction in Europe’s deep tech landscape
Switzerland is rapidly gaining recognition as one of the world’s most active and innovative deep tech ecosystems, proving that its influence extends well beyond traditional sectors such as watchmaking. According to recent reports, Switzerland now leads Europe in deep tech activity—spanning fields from AI and robotics to quantum computing and climate technology—driven by strong academic foundations and a surge in venture capital investment.
At the heart of this transformation lies a dynamic corridor stretching from Zurich to Lausanne and Geneva, with institutions such as ETH (Zurich) and EPFL (Lausanne) playing a key role in generating high-value research and spin-outs. But the deep tech momentum extends well beyond these traditional hubs. Across the country, from Basel’s life sciences cluster to emerging AI and blockchain companies in cantons like Zug and Ticino, Switzerland’s diverse innovation landscape is fuelling a new generation of start-ups tackling complex global challenges through science-led innovation.
Between 2019 and 2025, it is estimated that over 60% of deep tech venture capital in Europe has been or will be invested in this thriving Swiss ecosystem. On a per capita basis, Switzerland ranks among the global leaders, ahead of innovation powerhouses like Israel, the United States, and China. Building on the strengths of its major academic centres and the growing network of innovative companies across the country, Switzerland is attracting significant investment into breakthrough technologies that require long-term vision, specialised talent, and robust IP strategies.
To support the continued growth of the ecosystem, initiatives are underway to unlock access to international capital particularly at later stages of start-up development. A new fund dedicated to deep tech scale-ups is expected by the end of 2025, aiming to attract institutional investors and ensure promising technologies can successfully reach global markets.
For players in the Swiss deep tech landscape, the momentum is clear: the country is setting the pace not only in precision, but in pioneering technology with global impact.
